Trip Description: |
Fall colors paddle on a gentle river. Town of Athabasca to Poachers landing, approx 50km. Expect about 7-8 hours on the water. With shuttles and driving from Edmonton expect a 12-13 hour + day (dependent on river flow). The takeout is Poachers Landing Campground which is about 55 km, 45 minutes from our launch point. All of it is paved except for the last 1-2 km which is gravel. The gravel portion is more like dirt with a couple of low spots. I have a small SUV (Ford Escape) and had no concerns but it could be an issue for small cars if there was a lot of rain.
Participants are reminded to bring all the mandated boating safety equipment and are informed that cell coverage is good in Athabasca, but patchy in the surrounding area and unreliable on most of the river.
Note: The town of Athabasca is about 2 hours north of Edmonton.

We meet at the boat launch in Athabasca at 8 am Saturday morning. Access to the boat launch is across from the Husky service station at the intersection of 50th Ave and 49th Street. |

Please contact the Trip Coordinator no later than the Wednesday before the trip is schedule to start. Some trips may have space limitations or require early booking. Contact the Trip Coordinator. Trips are open to all current Northwest Voyageurs Canoe and Kayak Club members. You must provide your own boat or have prearranged a rental from the club to participate in the trip. Touring Kayak - Typically 12 feet long or more and 24" wide or less, with front and rear water tight compartments for flotation and storage, defined keel Rec Kayak - Typically less than 12 feet long, often greater than 24" wide, with one or no water tight compartments, may or may not have a keel Whitewater Kayak - Typically less than 10', no watertight compartments, no keel |
