Trip: Lakeland Canoe Circuit (Partial – with no portages)
Date: 10-15 Sept 2017
Route and description:
Sunday Sept 10: Depart Edmonton Sunday Sept 10 and camp overnight at Touchwood Lake campground.
Monday Sept 11: Load canoes and kayaks Monday at Jackson Lake Staging Area Monday morning on portage carts provided, approx. 9 am, for portage 3 km to the dock on Jackson Lake. If Jackson Lake is calm, we propose camping on Jackson Lake Peninsula campsite, and spending the day exploring Jackson Lake and the chain of small connected lakes to the portage to McGufifn Lake. (The camping choice will change if Jackson Lake is windy, which it often is. In that case, we will head east under the Isthmus Bridge into Kinnaird Lake, and proceed directly to one of the Kinnaird Island campsites.)
Tuesday Sept 12: Paddle to Kinnaird Island campsite.
Wednesday Sept 13: Paddle south through the connector between Kinnaird Lake and Blackett Lake. Camping options are Blackett East Island or Blackett West Island.
Thursday Sept 14: Retrace route to Kinnaird Island
Friday Sept 15: Return to Jackson Lake Dock and portage carts
Proposed activities: Exploring the bays and islands en route, birding (we should catch the last of the bird migration from the north, and there are resident eagles ), fishing (bring your gear if interested). Wildlife we have seen on these lakes: moose, beaver. Wildlife we have heard: something very big and noisy, roaring in the bush.
Requirements: Bear spray
Limit: Three tents altogether. Campsites are limited in size.
